UMA Unlicensed Mobile Access. It is on this standard that is the new o er o ixed mobile con ergence o rance Telecom, Unik, which will be a ailable on 5 October with the general public. The ad antage o this Protocol is that it is able to automatically manage and without any interruption o ser ice hando er between a ixed network, GSM, Wi i, or Bluetooth. or the user, it is the guarantee to ha e a single terminal, and a unique number, while mo ing inside or outside the home as in a network without a seam. And transparent: only an icon indicates on the terminal multimode signal comes rom any particular network. UMA was de ined initially in January 2004 by a group o telecom operators and equipment suppliers (BT, Cingular, O2, Rogers Wireless or e en T-Mobile or the irst); (Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Siemens and Sony Ericsson or the latter), the irst speci ications then sanctioned in April 2005 by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). "Howe er, rance Telecom is not a party"to this day"o ."We are in relation to all members o this association. " or the launch o Unik, we ha e worked with Ericsson and the three manu acturers to this day: Nokia, Samsung and Motorola", said a spokesman or the incumbent operator. According to Pyramid Research, "UMA collected largely a ours not only integrated ixed-mobile operators but also purely mobile operators or se eral reasons".
The American study cabinet list and in a recent study our main reasons explain this in atuation, which e idence including rance Telecom with Unik.

-The Subscriber has a single terminal with the ad antages o the ixed and mobile (inside co er, unique number, reduced ia Wi i and oIP rates), while the operator recorded a lower churn customer termination and a higher ARPU a erage re enue per subscriber. -The operator reduces its operating costs by mo ing the mobile network tra ic to networks broadband cheaper to operate, these sa ings can be passed on to the end user.
-Integrated operators protect with UMA against the ixed mobile substitution, since this technology helps retain the ixed access at home, not to mention the opportunity to sell more ser ices broadband to subscribers who ha e not yet switched their PSTN (dial-up) connection.
-UMA also o ers a tool or competiti e pre-emption or the built-in operators and mobile pure-players to counter the third operator o oIP and a oid losing market share with a product that new entrants will ind it di icult to replicate "."
But rance Telecom did well to retain UMA - ensuring the hando er - rather than the concurrent SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) technology used, or example, Neu Cegetel its concurrent con ergence o ering ixed-mobile- ree thread, Twin, launched since last June "I you ha e to choose between UMA and SIP, the choice depends mainly on whether i you are looking to launch something airly quickly - UMA is the right choice - or i you want something more compatible with the migration o networks to IP protocol - choose in this SIP case", explains to the Echos John Delaney, principal analyst at O um. The problem is that SIP does not permit the hando er as UMA and that, according to a spokesman o Neu Cegetel, "the M NO as they exist in rance do not today" replicate o er Unik in UMA.
